Potential Impact of Pesticides on Ecosystems and Human Health – Pathways to Sustainability
The Agadir Horticultural Complex organized a scientific seminar led by Professor Violette Geissen, an expert in soil degradation and land management at Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and coordinator of the European SPRINT project.
The seminar aimed to raise participants’ awareness of the effects of pesticides on ecosystems — particularly soil, biodiversity, and water — as well as on human health. Drawing on research conducted in several countries, Professor Geissen highlighted the risks associated with the intensive use of pesticides in agriculture.
The seminar also explored sustainable alternatives to conventional pesticides, such as agroecology, biopesticides, and preventive farming practices. These solutions were presented as practical tools for making agriculture more environmentally friendly.
A key part of the discussion focused on finding solutions adapted to the Moroccan agricultural context, taking into account the country's climatic, economic, and social realities. Professor Geissen’s presentation sparked many questions from students, researchers, and professionals in attendance.
The seminar also encouraged reflection on current agricultural practices and the choices to be made to build a more sustainable future. It is fully in line with the Agadir Horticultural Complex's commitment to training professionals who are aware of environmental challenges and capable of providing innovative solutions for the agriculture of tomorrow.
